Understanding your roll type
All three options provide a complete light-proof solution, using a fully tracked pelmet and side channel system.
Your choice is a simple decision between aesthetics (the final look) and function (clearing any window obstructions).

Forward Roll
The tracks and pelmet are mounted at the front of the window recess, sitting flush with the wall.
You need to clear obstructions inside the recess, such as window winders or large handles. This position provides the necessary space behind the blind for them to operate. Aesthetically, it provides a very clean, flush finish with the surrounding wall.

Rear Roll
The tracks and pelmet are mounted deep inside the window recess, close to the window glass.
You have a clear recess with no obstructions (like handles). This style creates a clean, built-in appearance and leaves your internal windowsill space free.

Outside Mount
The entire system is mounted on the wall or architrave around the window opening.
Your window recess is too shallow for either inside mount, or you have large obstructions that even a Forward Roll cannot clear. This provides the same blockout by covering the entire frame.
Compare the three roll types
| Forward roll | Rear roll | Outside mount | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it mounts | Front of the recess, flush with the wall | Deep in the recess, close to the glass | On the wall or architrave around the window |
| Best when | Handles or winders sit inside the recess | The recess is clear, with no obstructions | The recess is too shallow, or obstructions are large |
| The look | Clean and flush with the surrounding wall | Built-in, leaving the internal sill free | Covers the whole opening and frame |
| Recess depth | Enough depth for an inside mount | Enough depth for an inside mount | Little to none — mounts on the face |
| Clears obstructions | Yes — leaves room behind for handles | No | Yes — sits outside the recess entirely |
